How can Edmodo create a Community of Practice?
Edmodo can be used in many ways in order to be incorporated into any dynamic classroom.
Connect Communities:
Create Links to Prior Knowledge:
Create Communities Outside the Classroom:
Improve Communication Skills:
Connect Communities:
- One particular classroom used it to share a guest speaker with another classroom in a different state. Students took notes on the presentation using Edmodo, formulated questions for the guest speaker, and looked up websites to supplement the presentation information. (Dobler, 2012)
- Teachers are able to join online educational communities through Edmodo where they can exchange topic ideas, post comments, ask questions, and read the comments of other teachers. (Dobler, 2012)
Create Links to Prior Knowledge:
- Used to activate prior knowledge before beginning a new unit of study. Links to videos, images, articles, or website are provided to students on Edmodo, and students are able to choose the resources that interest them. This can also be used to encourage students to make predictions regarding the new unit. (Dobler, 2012)
Create Communities Outside the Classroom:
- One classroom uses Edmodo for conversations between students extending beyond the classroom, such as a local football game or travel plans for the upcoming long weekend. This facilitates personal connections while instilling the importance of Internet etiquette (“netiquette”). (Dobler, 2012)
Improve Communication Skills:
- A recent study considered the use of Edmodo in an EFL classroom, and found that student attitudes towards learning improved with the use of Edmodo. (Al-Kathiri, 2014)
