How can you incorporate Edmodo into your Math or Science Classroom?
Have a look at the following grid that outlines some of the ways to incorporate Edmodo into the classroom. Edmodo is ideal for collaborative learning, but can also allow students to work on an individual basis.
See below for more ideas and examples of how to use Edmodo in the classroom, as well as a science- and math-specific application for each. |
1) Assessments:
Science/Math Application:
This feature can be used to complete assessment as learning in the classroom. Using the poll feature can allow teachers to see what most students are having difficulties with. This can help shape the lesson for the rest of the class or be used at the end of the class as a formative assessment "out-the-door".
- Edmodo allows users to build quizzes as well as use a poll feature in order to use assessment as learning within the classroom.

2) Role Playing:
Science/Math Application:
Role playing and acting is an important incorporation into a Math and Science Classroom. One example for this type of feature is having students be famous scientists in history. For example, in Science 10, students can be Niels Bohr, and explain how he used atomic theory to create his models of the atom of different elements.
- Students can use Edmodo to understand key historical events by re-enacting them through the role play feature. Acting out/verbally interpreting knowledge of the subject can provide the opportunity for the teacher to formatively assess student comprehension.

3) Peer Reviews & Critiques:
Science/Math Application:
This feature can allow students to post their projects, scientific paper reviews, lab reviews, presentations and more in order to incorporate peer interaction and peer learning in a Math and Science classroom. Conversation and communication is extremely important for learning in any classroom.
- Teachers can use Edmodo to create small groups and have individual boards to post their reviews and feedback for the group. This also provides the opportunity for teachers to use assessment as learning through Edmodo, as it provides the option to watch conversations, reviews and more to unfold.

4) Build Digital Citizenship Skills:
Science/Math Application: Online behaviour and etiquette can be fostered in the classroom while using Edmodo. This can help build and/or project classroom etiquette rules as well.

5) Cultural Exchange Projects:
Science/Math Application:
Connecting with other classrooms around the globe allows for a purposeful incorporation of culture with Math and Science. This also creates opportunities for curriculum comparison/sharing of ideas and thoughts. Vygotsky's theory of child development describes cultural mediation and interpersonal connection as important pieces of learning. Interactions allow for a sharing of knowledge and culture which allow students to internalize their knowledge and make it concrete. Edmodo also allows teachers to share and speak with other teachers around the world.

6) At home access and help:
Science/Math Application:
Science and Math are courses that continually build off of prior knowledge. If a student is away from class, the at home access feature of Edmodo is really helpful for students to be able to check in to see what they have missed in class that day. This also allows for parents to be able to help their children at home and they are able to keep up to date with their child's progress throughout the course.
- Edmodo allows for teacher to communicate appropriately and professionally with their students outside the classroom. This also provides the opportunity for students who were absent from school to see what work was completed. Edmodo also allows for a “Parent” profile to be used, allowing parents of students to be able to see their child’s progress.

7) Science Probes:
Science/Math Application:
The polling system of Science Probes allow students to engage in a topic immediately. Students who are nervous about raising their hand in class may be more comfortable answering online. These probes can be supplemented with videos or other pictures.
- Edmodo has Science probes which can be used in a classroom to create discussion and bring more engagement to students in Science.

8) Mobile Learning:
Science/Math Application:
Creating connections in mathematics and science is key for learning. On-the-go accessibility allows students to interact with Edmodo outside the classroom. An example in which Edmodo could be used outside the classroom would be on a nature hike when discussing Ecology. Students could have their pre-recorded audio information clips from Edmodo on their phone, specifically lined up to listen when the teacher stops at specific points in the hike. This can act as a supplemental tool to show video/audio to provide extra information or real life examples outside of the classroom.
- Edmodo is accessible by a mobile App, which allows for increased accessibility within the classroom and can make learning interactive and available almost anywhere.

9) Project Based Learning:
Science/Math Application:
Students can collaborate on any Math or Science topic. Teachers can create small groups on Edmodo which can allow for anytime access for students. This can be used to set up school events like Earth hour/Clean up the Earth projects or in class projects as well. Links can be used within Edmodo to submit project assignments.
- Project Based Learning can be facilitated using the small group feature.

10) Differentiated Instruction:
- Edmodo allows for individualized lessons, events, probes, sharing features and more, which facilitates the use of differentiated instruction within a classroom
Science/Math Application:
Teachers can use Quick Checks and pre-assessments online using the poll or probe feature that will help create individualized assessments and lessons for students.
